Ostende

Ostend, also known as 'Oostende', is a major commercial and fishing port, connected by canals with Bruges and Ghent. Ostend is also an industrial and rail center, as well as a seaside resort. It has a ferry terminal that connects the city with England. Not much larger than the state of Maryland, Belgium is one of the most densely populated nations in Europe. Surrounded by France, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, Belgium lies at the crossroads of the continent. Within the country's boundaries are the relics of a colorful past and a promising future. Excellent ports and few natural defenses have long made Belgium a natural battleground. During both World Wars the country was the scene of fierce battles, but its recovery was swift and prosperous.

In the morning you can attend the homecoming of the shrimping boats at the Fishermen's Quay. The most delicious seafood and fish are offered for sale in typical fish stands. The Europa Building - The Europa-building (100m high) is the highest along the European coast. An ultra-quick lift brings you to the 34th-floor in just a few seconds. When the weather is clear, you can see Bruges and the Flemish inland from the panoramic terrace.Napoleon Fortress - In Ostend you can also find a fortress constructed under orders of Napoleon. The building of the 'Napoleon Fortress' started in 1810. The fortress had to protect 250 soldiers. In World War II the Germans had a command post there.

Food

Surrounded by other countries known for their haute cuisine, Belgium has managed to create a cuisine that is unmistakably its own. The sandy Mechelen region produces wonderful asparagus; ham comes from the Ardennes; mussels are especially good in Brussels and on the coast. Sausage comes in many varieties, and seafood specialties are invariably delicious. Beer lovers can choose from 200 varieties of beers.
