Madeira

The island of Madeira is lapped by the waters of the Gulf Stream with warm comfortable summers and mild winters that make it an enchanting holiday destination all year round.

Attractions

If you look at the size of Madeira, you can hardly imagine that this island has so much to offer! From many historical monuments, squares and streets in the capital of Funchal to enchanting gardens, picturesque villages, amazing landscapes, impressive volcanic caves, rugged coast lines, beautiful natural beaches and, last but not least, breathtaking views, there is so much to see that you will soon realize that one visit to Madeira just isn’t enough!

Food

Due to the long established fishing tradition on the island, fish is playing an important role on the daily menu of the locals. Tuna, 'espada' (black scabbard fish), ‘bacalhau’ (codfish), 'gaiado' (a regional fish treated like codfish) and 'potas' (similar to a huge squid) are featuring in many main courses. Traditionally, fresh tuna is first marinated in olive oil, garlic, salt and oregano before it is fried, and it is usually served with cooked cornmeal.
