Sohag
Sohag is a Nile city in Upper Egypt, about 100 km south of Asyut. It sits on the west bank, across the river from the ancient town of Akhmim. The surrounding region is one of the richest in Egypt for early Christian heritage. The governorate also includes Abydos, one of the most sacred sites of ancient Egypt.
Attractions
Just outside the city are the White Monastery (Deir el-Abyad), founded by Saint Shenoute in the 5th century, and the nearby Red Monastery (Deir el-Ahmar). The Red Monastery's painted church interior has been carefully restored and is one of the finest examples of late antique wall painting anywhere. Across the river in Akhmim, a colossal statue of Meritamun, daughter of Ramesses II, stands in an open-air museum. The Sohag National Museum holds finds from the region. South of the city, at Abydos, is the Temple of Seti I, famous for its finely carved reliefs and the Abydos King List.
