Nag Hammadi

Nag Hammadi is a Nile town in Qena Governorate, about 80 km northwest of Luxor. It is known around the world for the Nag Hammadi Library. These are early Christian and Gnostic manuscripts, including the Gospel of Thomas, that local farmers found buried in a jar near the cliffs of Jabal al-Tarif in 1945. Today Nag Hammadi is a busy farming and industrial town, and cruise ships dock here to visit the temples at Abydos and Dendera.

Attractions

Nag Hammadi is the closest port for visiting the Temple of Seti I at Abydos, with its well-preserved reliefs, the mysterious Osireion and the Abydos King List. The Temple of Hathor at Dendera, one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt, is also within easy reach. The cliffs of Jabal al-Tarif, where the Nag Hammadi codices were found, are close to town. The original manuscripts are now kept at the Coptic Museum in Cairo.
