Sandnes
Sandnes sits at the head of the Gandsfjord in Rogaland county, just south of Stavanger, and is one of Norway's larger cities. It was once known for its pottery and brickworks. Today it is called "Sykkelbyen," the Bicycle City, because of its history of bicycle making and its many cycle paths. It makes a good base for the fjords and mountains of southwest Norway, and for the long sandy beaches of the Jæren coast.
Attractions
Vitenfabrikken is a hands-on science center and museum in a restored industrial building on the waterfront. Kvadrat is one of the largest shopping centers in Norway. Kongeparken amusement park is a short drive away in Ålgård. Sandnes is also a good starting point for trips to the Lysefjord and Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), the famous flat-topped cliff that rises 604 meters above the fjord.
