Split

World famous Roman core of the Old City makes Split one of the most interesting places to see. Roman core belongs to the UNESCO protected heritage of the world. Today, Split is a popular vacation spot, a sophisticated centre of activity in Dalmatia, boasting numerous art galleries, concert halls and theatres.

Activities

The most important attraction and a must see is the Old Town within Diocletian's Palace. Its sights are covered on both tours, but if you decide to explore independently be aware that sightseeing has to be on foot. Located in Gripe Fortress on a hilltop east of the Old Town, the Maritime Museum features an interesting exhibit of wartime maps, photos, artifacts and scale models. Captions are in Croatian.

Shopping

The best shopping area is within the Old Town, particularly the Placa located close to Diocletian's Palace. Here you can find numerous small shops, boutiques and art galleries. Locally produced crafts, jewelry and wines from the area of Middle Dalmatia are considered good buys.

Food

If you are planning to sample Dalmatian cuisine, you will find plenty of restaurants in all categories and price ranges. Local specialties include such tasty appetizers as Dalmatian proscuitto, sheep cheese, marinated fish and seafood salads. As a main course, fish and seafood dishes fresh from the Adriatic Sea can be a real treat. Your meal would not be complete without Dalmatia's excellent wines and a glass of local brandy.
