Hamilton

Hamilton is not only the capital of Bermuda; it's the beating heart. A picturesque harbour city graced with shops, museums, galleries and gardens, Hamilton is also the hub of international and local businesses. On any given morning you might see commuters in Bermuda shorts traveling to work on scooters, passing each other with a warm "good morning." This juxtaposition of global sophistication and local flavour gives Hamilton its unique charm. The town of Hamilton was founded in 1788 and named after Sir Henry Hamilton who served as Governor of Bermuda to 1794. People in the capital Town of St. George, objected to the creation of the new upstart town, but the Governor felt it made good sense to have a town in the central area, hence the motto, 'Sparsa Collegit', 'brought together the scattered'. The new town thrived and overtook the Town of St. George, becoming the capital of Bermuda in 1815. Today the City of Hamilton has a colourful, vibrant character. Take a walk through this historic town and take in the sea breezes, harbour views and the pastel palette of shops, galleries and restaurants. Hamilton, Pembroke and its nearby parishes offer so much more; intoxicating gardens, historic churches, and an interactive aquarium and zoo, and all rolled into one jaw-dropping good time.

Attractions

Perhaps the best way to see Bermuda's more than 350 islands is on a traditional-style sailing boat. Spend half a day sailing the incredibly clear, turquoise waters of Bermuda. You'll anchor during your sail, so that you can swim or just soak up a bit of island sunshine to take home with you.

Activities

Mountain-bike the Bermuda Railway Trail. The original narrow-gauge Bermuda Railway is long gone. However, the trail remains, and offers some of the island's most spectacular views, with stunning seascapes, lush gardens, and exotic flora and fauna. Explore the city of Hamilton on a scenic trolley tour. Take an evening Champagne Cruise aboard a 56-foot catamaran. Discover the magical world of the ocean bottom, even if you can't swim, bell-diving the blue waters of Bermuda. Take a glass-bottom-boat safari and see fascinating coral reefs and fish in the crystal-blue waters. Explore the Royal Navy Dockyard and King's Wharf, an impressive military fortress built in the 1800's, which now houses various shops and museums.

Shopping

Many British goods are more affordable in Bermuda than in the United States because of Bermuda's special arrangement with Great Britain. Frequent visitors stock up on porcelain, crystal, silverware, jewelry, timepieces and perfume. Bermuda's selection of antiques and collectibles is extraordinary, with antique engravings and handmade pottery and crafts. The island also offers fine-quality tableware and crystal.

Currency

The Bermuda dollar (BMD) is the official currency. It is on par with the U.S. dollar. U.S. dollars, traveler's checks and credit cards are widely accepted.
