Loreto

Loreto, a charming town located midway up the peninsula bordering the Sea of Cortez, was the first capital of the Californias. Its famous missions were built by the Jesuits in the 1600s. In fact, "300 Years Old and Still Undiscovered!" is the town's official slogan. Loreto has a quaint downtown area with shaded plazas and an attractive malecon (boardwalk) that draws locals and tourists alike for strolls along the waterfront.

Attractions

Visitors to Loreto should not miss the opportunity to visit several stunningly pristine islands nearby, such as Isla Coronado, where you can snorkel in the crystalline waters and sun bathe on the fine white sand beach. The larger Isla del Carmen is also a lovely spot with excellent beaches and dive spots.

Currency

Mexico's currency is the peso (MXN). The $ sign is used to refer to pesos, so don't be shocked at the price tags. Any prices in U.S. dollars are listed as US$ or USD. Many hotels, restaurants and shops also accept major credit cards, which usually offer you a good exchange rate.
