Porquerolles

You may have seen this charming island and not known it, for Porquerolles is favored by European filmmakers seeking tropical, South Pacific-style scenery. Its official name, Ile de Porquerolles, is almost as long as the island itself. Yet this is the largest of the Iles d´Hyeres, an archipelago in the Riviera, and a splendid getaway. Enjoy the cafes, small restaurants, and fine beaches.

Attractions

A short walk takes you to white sand beaches through hills covered in sage, rosemary, rnyrtle, pines and heather.

Food

Ah, the pleasures of the Provencal table...bouillabaisse thick with shellfish, aioli (garlic-flavored mayonnaise), ratatouille (eggplant, squash, and tomatoes with olive oil), and, to highlight the meal, fine wine from a trio of island vineyards. The rose is best known (Porquerolles produced one of the first recognized Cotes de Provence wines), but the reds and whites also have a distinctive character.

Currency

The Euro (EUR), the currency of the European Union, is the official currency of France.
