Ponza

Ponza is the largest and most beautiful of the Pontine Islands, which lie off the coast of Italy near Anzio. This section of the Mediterranean has been a resort area since ancient times; Cicero had a summer palace here, and the emperors Caligula and Nero were born nearby. Ponza boasts the Chiaia di Luna beach and a magnificent shoreline indented with bays, cliffs, and grottoes.

Activities

Chiaia di Luna - One of the most spectacular beaches of Ponza... with high cliffs all around... mmm... don't miss the sunset from here The "Cathedral" of Palmarola - Palmarola is called the Pearl of Mediterranean Sea... and if you visit it... you can see this is not an exaggeration. The island is still quite wild, and just 30 minutes by boat from Ponza. Best Period to visit is June and September... when not too many tourists fill its crystal waters with any kind of boats. The "Cathedral" is a cliff coast made by column shaped rocks. The islands have volcanic origin. The Roman tunnel - Built 500 years before Christ, the tunnel is 500 mt. long and it leads from Ponza village to Chiaia di Luna, on the other side of the island. Pilato's caves - One of the most interesting Roman age works left on the island are these caves, used maybe as fish-growing pools. They are only reachable by boat. Cala Feola - The natural pools of Cala Feola on the west coast of the island of Ponza. They used to be old roman pools for breeding fishes.
