Wrangell

Wrangell is one of the oldest towns in Alaska and the only place in Alaska to have been ruled by the Russians, British and Americans. Prehistoric rock carvings or petroglyphs, dating as early as 8,000 years ago, have been found here. All this and more makes Wrangell a great place to get lost in Alaskan history.

Activities

• Petroglyph Beach in Wrangell has the highest concentration of petroglyphs in Southeast and has recently been designated a State Historic Park.
• Anan Creek is an ancient Tlingit native fishing site where salmon thrive and bears come to feast on the bounty. The Anan estuary and Observatory is accessible by boat or plane.
• Garnets should be every visitor's souvenir of Wrangell. The Garnet Ledge is located at the mouth of the Stikine River and belongs to the children of Wrangell. Children and their families collect the garnets from the rock schist to share with visitors.
• Chief Shakes Island, the site of Chief Shakes Tribal House, is on the National Register as an historic monument.

Many original pieces of local artwork, representing a variety of styles and media can be viewed and purchased in local gift stores and galleries. Clothing stores provide casual to formal wear as well as items designed specific to Wrangell. Stores have a variety of educational materials and mementos for purchase to help you remember your journey.

Hungry? Local restaurants and dining establishments offer a range of cuisine and atmosphere from locally caught and processed seafood to take-out menus or tables with a view. Any seafood you catch can also be locally custom processed for your enjoyment upon return home.

The U.S. dollar (USD) is the official currency. Traveler's checks and credit cards are also widely accepted.
